Driving Test Car Hire in Ireland: What Learner Drivers Need to Know

Your driving test is booked, you have been practising and you are starting to feel ready. There is just one practical detail to sort out: the car you will use on the day.

Not every learner has access to a suitable vehicle. You might share a family car, have been learning with an instructor or simply prefer to take the test in a vehicle you have already practised in. Hiring a car from a driving instructor can be a useful option.

Before arranging driving test car hire in Ireland, it is worth understanding what the Road Safety Authority (RSA) expects, what to ask the provider and how to make sure the vehicle is suitable for your test.

Do You Need to Bring Your Own Car to the Driving Test?

Yes. The RSA does not provide a car for your practical driving test. You must arrange a suitable vehicle and be insured to drive it.

You do not necessarily need to own the car. You may be able to use a family member's vehicle, another suitable insured car or hire one through an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI).

For learners who have been taking lessons in a driving school's vehicle, hiring the instructor's car can make the arrangements simpler. You already know how the vehicle handles, where the controls are and how it responds during everyday driving.

The RSA confirms that vehicles may be hired from an ADI. You can read its guidance in the official driving test FAQs.

Why Consider Driving Test Car Hire?

Using a familiar vehicle can make the practical side of test day easier. You will still need to demonstrate safe driving and good decision-making, but you will not have to spend time getting used to an unfamiliar car immediately before the test.

Here are some reasons learners consider hiring a test car.

You have been learning in an instructor's car

If most of your lessons have taken place in the same vehicle, you will already understand its clutch, brakes, steering and general handling.

That familiarity can be helpful when you are concentrating on observation, road positioning and following the tester's instructions.

You do not have access to a suitable car

Some learner drivers do not own a vehicle or cannot use the family car for the test. Others may have access to a car but are unsure whether its insurance or condition meets the RSA requirements.

An instructor may be able to provide a vehicle arranged specifically for driving test use.

You want a manual or automatic vehicle

Your test vehicle must match the type of driving licence you are applying for. If you have been learning in an automatic car, make sure you arrange an automatic test vehicle.

Remember that passing the test in an automatic car results in an automatic-only licence restriction (Code 78). If you want to drive a manual car, you will need to pass your test in a manual vehicle.

RSA Requirements for a Driving Test Car in Ireland

This is the part you should check carefully. A car being available for hire does not automatically mean it meets every requirement for the driving test.

The vehicle must be suitable for the category of test you are taking, roadworthy and properly documented.

The RSA's current car requirements include the following:

Requirement	What to check
Insurance	Valid insurance covering you to drive the test vehicle
Insurance certificate	A valid certificate of motor insurance showing that you are insured to drive the vehicle
Insurance disc	A valid original insurance disc displayed on the vehicle
Motor tax	A valid original motor tax disc
NCT	A valid NCT disc, where applicable
L-plates	Correctly displayed at the front and rear
Roadworthiness	The vehicle must be safe and in proper working condition

There are also checks relating to tyres, brakes, lights, seatbelts, warning lights, windows and other safety features.

The RSA states that a test may not go ahead if the vehicle or its documentation does not meet the requirements. You could lose your test fee if you arrive with an unsuitable car.

Always check the latest RSA vehicle preparation guidance before your appointment.

Important: Check the Insurance Documents Before Test Day

Insurance is particularly important when hiring a vehicle.

From 9 March 2026, the RSA requires candidates to present a valid certificate of motor insurance showing that they are insured to drive the vehicle being used for the test.

If your name is not on the certificate, you must also have an email or letter on headed paper from the insurance company confirming that you are insured to drive that particular vehicle.

The RSA's guidance explains the accepted documentation, including the certificate and supporting confirmation where required. Do not assume that a hire arrangement alone is sufficient proof of cover.

Before booking, ask the provider:

Is the vehicle insured for use in an RSA driving test?
Will I be covered to drive it on the date of my test?
Will the correct insurance certificate be available?
If I am not named on the certificate, can the required confirmation letter be supplied?
Will the vehicle have a valid insurance disc, motor tax disc and NCT disc, where applicable?

Get clear answers before paying for the hire. You can also review the RSA's updated insurance requirements.

Hiring a Driving Test Car from an Instructor

An Approved Driving Instructor may offer a vehicle for your practical test. This can be convenient if you have already completed lessons with that instructor.

For example, Next Level Driving School offers a driving test car hire service in Dublin.

The school describes its available vehicles as maintained and insured, with manual and automatic options. If you are considering hiring a car, contact the school to confirm availability, the arrangements for your particular test date and the documentation you will need.

It is also sensible to ask whether a familiarisation session or pre-test lesson can be arranged before the appointment. This gives you an opportunity to drive the vehicle and become comfortable with it before the test begins.

Should You Take a Pre-Test Lesson Before Hiring the Car?

Car hire takes care of the vehicle, but it does not replace driving preparation.

A pre-test lesson can help you identify areas that need attention before the assessment. It also gives you an opportunity to practise in the vehicle you intend to use, where this can be arranged.

Your instructor may review:

Mirror checks and observation.
Road positioning and lane discipline.
Approaching junctions and roundabouts.
Speed control and progress.
Moving off and stopping safely.
Reversing around a corner.
The turnabout and hill start.
Your response to signs, markings and other road users.

A mock test can also help you understand how consistently you are applying what you have learned.

How to Prepare the Car Before Your Driving Test

Even when you hire a vehicle, it is worth checking the arrangements in advance. Do not leave all the vehicle checks until the morning of the test.

A few days beforehand, confirm the following:

Vehicle availability: Make sure the car is booked for the correct date and time.
Transmission type: Confirm that it is manual or automatic, as required.
Insurance documents: Check that the certificate and any additional confirmation are ready.
Vehicle discs: Confirm that the insurance, tax and NCT discs are valid and displayed correctly.
L-plates: Check that suitable plates are fitted at the front and rear.
Vehicle condition: Make sure there are no warning lights or known safety problems.
Collection arrangements: Agree where and when you will meet the instructor or collect the car.

It is also worth checking that the car is clean and that the windscreen, mirrors and windows are clear. The passenger seat, seatbelt and door on the tester's side must be in proper working order.

The RSA has a detailed driving test vehicle checklist covering these requirements.

What Should You Do on the Day of the Driving Test?

Give yourself enough time. Rushing to collect a car or arriving late at the test centre can add unnecessary pressure.

If you are hiring through an instructor, agree the meeting time beforehand. Make sure you have your learner permit and the required insurance documentation.

Before setting off, check that you are comfortable with the vehicle's controls. Adjust the seat and mirrors, locate the indicators and wipers, and make sure you understand how the handbrake and other controls operate.

Try not to spend the final few minutes cramming in new information. Focus on driving safely and responding to the road conditions.

The RSA advises candidates to arrive early and ensure that both their permit and vehicle meet the test requirements. Its driving test terms and conditions explain what must be in order on the day.

Frequently Asked Questions About Driving Test Car Hire

Can I hire a car for my driving test in Ireland?

Yes. The RSA allows vehicles to be hired from an Approved Driving Instructor. You must still ensure that the vehicle meets the requirements and that you are insured to drive it.

Can I use my instructor's car for the driving test?

You may be able to, provided the instructor offers this service and the vehicle meets the RSA requirements. Confirm availability, insurance and documentation directly with the instructor.

Can I hire an automatic car for my driving test?

Yes, provided it is suitable for the test and you are taking the test in an automatic vehicle. Passing in an automatic car gives you an automatic-only licence restriction.

Does the RSA provide a car for the test?

No. Candidates must arrange their own suitable vehicle. This can be a car they own, a suitable vehicle they have permission to use or one hired from an ADI.

What insurance documents do I need for a hired driving test car?

You must provide proof that you are insured to drive the vehicle. Under the RSA's rules introduced on 9 March 2026, this includes a valid certificate of motor insurance. If you are not named on the certificate, you also need confirmation from the insurance company by email or letter on headed paper.

Can I take my driving test in a car I have never driven before?

The RSA's vehicle requirements do not mean you must use the same car in which you learned. However, it is sensible to become familiar with the vehicle before test day. Arrange a practice session if possible so you understand its controls and handling.
